Principles of photo imaging output 210 (Theme II)

Conwy via Llanddulas

(for Assignment 206-2)

So that’s it... today I received my final prints for theme II - Landscapes. It come more or less satisfied quality and I can put them on screen now.

If I have to be honest that was not what I meant to do as my final for Landscape theme.... my intention was capture sunrises, but as I researched more and more I quite understand that to get decant sunrise I have to live on a field or a hill, buy more better equipment and most of all it will take me ages as you all know sunrise in England is hard to catch as there is mainly cloudy then sunny weather conditions....

So when I decided to put sunrises a side...I start to look for new options and exactly that time I went for small day trip to Wales with kids...I didn't bring my tripod as I thought I won’t be able to capture something with my kids racing around. So we all went to small town Conwy, what I wanted to see for a long time. As history lover I admire old places and I was really keen to see Conwy castle,... and also on our way back we stopped near seaside in Llanddulas.

Whether was nice and sunny, probably too sunny and I thought I won’t be getting any nice picture in this light and I was right...I went home and I didn't like any of them, except for a few... All my images was dull... too bright and absolutely with no any feel as a good photograph.... as I remembered a couple students in my group was doing black and white photography and I decade to try convert them in black and white... when I talk to my tutor he was quite happy to accept my Wales trip black and whites.... so I began to improve them, which is a bit shame as its not make me a good photographer, anyway.... they there are.....I am pleased with result - even if it wasn't what I meant, but I have many years ahead, so this will do for now and I`ll improve my skills for future so I could do without computer post-processing.

Setup

All photographs were taken in Wales - in town known as Conwy and by the small village Llandulas seaside.

Lighting

It was midday when I get there, so not the best part of the day - bright sun all over the place.

Lens

Nikon 18-55 mm VR lens. (purchased together with camera)

Camera Settings

Manual Mode –  Image quality -  JPEG-Fine.

Accessories

Cokin Gradual Grey G2 Light (ND2) filter

Image Nr 1

/remembrance/
Camera Mode:     Manual
Shutter Speed:     1/100 sec
Aperture:             F 7.1
ISO:                   100
Lens Length:       38mm
White Balance:    Auto
Meter Setting:     Pattern
Quality setting:    JPG
Light:                  Daylight only

It is part of a boat and originally was vertical (portrait) position,...I took a picture of it when I walked down to Conwy bay- there was boats everywhere and I was looking for some nice lines and patterns when I saw that....

When I get home I turn it to black and white (already in my camera - as it has option like this), add some contrast and sharpness on a compurer with HP MediaSmart Photo... and it looked good to me, but there was one problem, it was portrait layout and if I wanted to include this image in my final part I had to change it for landscape to suit my other images.

Fallowing advise from my tutor I crop it using Photo Shop.

I quite pleased with the image itself, only thing that worries me, that I probably made it darker that should be, as I added some more contrast. Well what’s done done…that time I was satisfied, now not so much…you decide…

Image Nr 2

Camera Mode:     Manual
Shutter Speed:     1/100 sec
Aperture:             F 8
ISO:                   100
Lens Length:       55mm
White Balance:    Auto
Meter Setting:     Pattern
Quality setting:    JPG
Light:                  Daylight only

Same story and same location- Conwy bay…these two was so adorable that I couldn’t resist not to take a picture….originally was in colour, same as Nr 1 added contrast and a bit sharpness, what makes same problem, it`s looks dark, well it didn’t, when I post-processing, probably my experience growing in days.

Image Nr 3

Camera Mode:     Manual
Shutter Speed:     1/100 sec
Aperture:             F 7.1
ISO:                   100
Lens Length:       50mm
White Balance:    Auto
Meter Setting:     Pattern
Quality setting:    JPG
Light:                  Daylight only

Conwy bay...bunch of fishing nets - excellent pattern. Same as my Nr 1 boat originally shoot in vertical position and then cropped in photo shop to suit my needs.

Also I added sharpness and contrast, with help from HP Media Smart Photo and  created soft focus around the edges, placing main in the middle...that way I liked image more and I things it`s works very well...

...whitaut soft focus it looked a bit pale and boring...but thats only my opinion...

Image Nr 4

/seagulls/
Camera Mode:     Manual
Shutter Speed:     1/125 sec
Aperture:             F 9
ISO:                   100
Lens Length:       40mm
White Balance:    Auto
Meter Setting:     Pattern
Quality setting:    JPG
Light:                  Daylight only

Just by a chance this photograph get to the final...it was least on a list, but my tutor insisted to put it between my final 10...originally colour, turned to black and white it just doesn’t work for me and I didn’t like it...I tried different ways to improved but all was the same...nothing much you can change there is it???

So I come up with idea to darken the edges with same HP Media Smart Photo software effect tools- choose vignette option and result was more than better…it gives something else to that image than just plain reflections of plain sky…

Image Nr 5

Camera Mode:     Manual
Shutter Speed:     1/125 sec
Aperture:             F 8
ISO:                   100
Lens Length:       40mm
White Balance:    Auto
Meter Setting:     Pattern
Quality setting:    JPG
Light:                  Daylight only

Probably one of my favorites, and not just from Black White’s, but I quite liked in colour as well… as I was about to leave Conwy I past this boat and was touched by the colours, lines, shapes - ideal subject for good image….
On a computer I add a bit more contrast and sharpness, silly of me, I don’t think now that was necessary, but well as I already printed it’s too late for regrets….

Like you see isn’t so bad at all, and which one I like more is hard to say, even if they are the same, these images are very different…

Image Nr 6

/stonebeach/

Camera Mode:     Manual
Shutter Speed:     1/160 sec
Aperture:             F 9
ISO:                   100
Lens Length:       55mm
White Balance:    Auto
Meter Setting:     Pattern
Quality setting:    JPG
Light:                  Daylight only

Not the best of mine, as I can say…in colour look even more boring, but transforming to black and white create nice grey tone passage, which I pleased about, as it gives to some temper to image itself.

That was one of the first scenes which I captured, when we all get down from our car in outskirts of a small village Llanddulas, (hard to even pronounce that). Sun was shining upon us and I already, that time, given up to get anything decant from this trip, so I just shoot everything, not even much think about it. But like I said….as a black and white is somehow worked for me – what I find rally surprising….

Image Nr 7

/loneliness/

Camera Mode:     Manual
Shutter Speed:     1/160 sec
Aperture:             F 11
ISO:                   100
Lens Length:       20mm
White Balance:    Auto
Meter Setting:     Pattern
Quality setting:    JPG
Light:                  Daylight only

Same old problem, I think I over use a contrast and not only on black on white – on my colour image as well. At the beginning it was without any contrast, a bit overexposed and if you count that awful light than nothing good was even possible. Can you imagine same scene in the sunset, probably will be stunning, but well….maybe I am so self-critical, but I could done something a bit different.

There is my both images and you can compare them…first – originally less of colour, pale, without any contrast at all….bellow after my corrections, which I overdone….after when I change it to black and white is made it a bit too dark…Sometimes is too hard to realize in the work progress, but more often I see my final ten – more critical I get. With flowers I dint have problems like this, I knew what I was doing and I didn’t need any corrections as well….when I went to Wales I didn’t know that I`ll be coming back home with my themed photographs, but that’s life- more you live more you learn….

Image Nr 8

/abstraction/

Camera Mode:     Manual
Shutter Speed:     1/200 sec
Aperture:             F 11
ISO:                   200
Lens Length:       55mm
White Balance:    Auto
Meter Setting:     Pattern
Quality setting:    JPG
Light:                  Daylight only

Same story, but a bit better composition, - which I pleased about. Why my ISO is 200 is hard to tell, what was on my mind beck then I don’t remember.

I added contrast and sharpness after change to black and white.
Black and white photography from one point of view seems easy, especially in digital, but making these images I realize, I have so much to learn more.

Black and White itself should consist form black and white colours, bur now looking closer my images it seems to me more Black and Grey. Printed out it looks better but on screen I am not very keen about results.

Image Nr 9

/irresistible/

Camera Mode:     Manual
Shutter Speed:     1/160 sec
Aperture:             F 9
ISO:                   100
Lens Length:       55mm
White Balance:    Auto
Meter Setting:     Pattern
Quality setting:    JPG
Light:                  Daylight only

I`ll be honest this irresistible image looked better in colour – seriously, but then it won’t be suitable along with others. No matter now, that it has same problems with contrast this photograph is very dear to me – tiny, week flowers making thru the stones…

Originally was a bit pale, I added contrasts, same to Image Nr 7, and then changed to black and white .

Image Nr. 10

/the perfect/

Camera Mode:     Manual
Shutter Speed:     1/160 sec
Aperture:             F 11
ISO:                   100
Lens Length:       40mm
White Balance:    Auto
Meter Setting:     Pattern
Quality setting:    JPG
Light:                  Daylight only

My favorite – the perfect. I didn't done anything to that photograph – it was already captured in Monochrome setting, never been in colour, never been post processed and that’s way I liked the best.

If you looked the image is nothing special appears, but all lines and small holiday home structure makes perfect composition.
I remember, sitting by the sea that time, I was fed up from colour images from my camera, which I didn't like at all, so I decide to go through some options on camera display, what lead me to Monochrome setting…. glad did choose to experiment- it lead me to even one good image.

_____________________________________

So that's about it....all images was printed (order took a place with DS Color Labs) and mounted. I already had mounts ready size 8x10- leftovers from Level 1, which I didn't get a chance to use then. Prints was satisfied quality and am really pleased. I took a picture to let you know what exactly I am talking about.

I choose that kind presentation method as I thought it`s very suitable for black and whites...even more probably will be real frames, but considering that is not for some kind of exhibition but only for a assignment it works well.

Now only whats left - to finish off  my blog and start waiting for results...hope good ones....:))

Research part V

No color in my life now...well for a wile...since my second theme change slightly bit....I don't even know how to call it now....Landscape via Reportage...maybe...

Anyway I had to finish my research on this subject...only one month is left till final date...and lots more to do....
Same as last year in my research about photographers I wanted include some one from my country...probably it is something to do with sentimentality...I left long time ago, I new only old masters, but recently looking through the Internet Latvian web pages I discover that since then a lot of new artists are become more popular, so I decided to pic up one of them, with similar stile what I need to complete my journey to black&white photography.

Raimo Lielbriedis

/Despite the ability to realistically and simply reflect reality, photography is one of the most personal and unexpected form of expression. / R. Lielbriedis//

Raimo Lielbriedis (1962) - dealing with photography since 1978. He organized six solo exhibitions and participated in more than 17 group exhibitions. His works in collections can be found not only in Latvia, but also in Denmark, Poland, Bulgaria and Finland. Recently he won a prize in the Year photo gallery "Art Garden" and is one of the tutors of John Rosenthal  - Riga- High School of Art.

He also is author of book, what introduces beginners with world of photography - "How to shoot?"

The book does not pretend to be a fundamental photography course. Relatively easy to read, distancing from the technical terminology and hardware descriptions and also very positive.
Addition of each chapter, with practical tasks, Raimo talks about main success key for freshly baked camera owners - to think, before press a switch.

I didn't have that book I just been reading the review...and then he grab my attention with some of his black and white works, no matter that he also gives attention to color photography.

Raimo black&white`s are very inspiring, very similar to what I wanted to achieve and what I need researching more....

This is my favorite...I saw this and wish I was home...I can feel the sea...monochrome gives this photograph that fantastic feel, what color will probably kill...

Low angle, slightly close, interesting composition, very own and very strong in my opinion....sea is nearby, house in the edge, still made me feel homesick.

I like sea scenes in color, nothing wrong with that, but this black&white image capture also some kind of beauty, that days breeze and mood of the sea....

I am not patriot, not at all....but I am happy that even my miserable poor and small country have persons, that despite everything still sees a nice things, do good work, and achieve something...

R.Lielbriedis presentation methods also talks about author only positive way, looks excellent and works very well in order to impress audience of exhibition....it is something similar what I had in mind at the end of this theme...frame all my work...

Landscape is the genre which, more than any other, sets in competition the simple viewer...the painter, amateur or professional photographer and each one wishes to recall a personal vision of this collective spectacle....But however - landscape requires particular attention to physical environment rather than people.

John Blakemore

John Blakemore is a master - renowned for his richly detailed and nuanced landscapes and still-lifes, predominantly in monochrome.

Born in Coventry. He discovered photography during National Service with the Royal Air Force in Tripoli in the 1950s. After return he started working on his own documentary photography in Coventry, shooting the new immigrant population.

The University of Derby became his new employer where he taught the Diploma in Creative Photography.

His landscape photography began just before he moved to Derby and it was always about ideas about place rather than just the place itself. He wanted to capture a sense of the forces that shape the landscape at large. Nearly all of John’s work was based on the exploration of a theme or topic and worked out as a series of pictures over time. In the late 1980s he stopped his landscape work and started working on still life.

Borrowing once again books from library I get one of his works - workshops in Black and White photography.... very good learning material for those who working with film...I didn't find nothing useful for myself as a digital camera owner apart from lovely images of water making parallels with my own work.

Even if world accelerates towards the digital future John Blakemore works are irresistible …I really admire how he captures water and sea scenes...how he balance the black and white tones of rock and sea......rockfaces and occasional rock pool-the intimate details of the beach.

John Blakemore, as I read, is one of those very rare individuals in British photography whose work is known, and appreciated, across the entire spectrum of the craft. Whether you talk to advertising or editorial photographers, artists or darkroom specialists, his reputation is held in equal respect. One of the strengths of his imagery lies in its elements of accessibility. It's work that someone entirely new to photography can approach and enjoy.

    Naseeb Baroody
    /1924 –  2010/

Just by accident ...researching materials about black and white photography I came across to Naseeb Baroody. Fine artist which photographs touch me deeply. I sew couple images by him in "Better picture guide to Black&White photography" by Terry Hope, so I decided to explore more and proudly put him into may final part of research...

More I learn about great landscape photographers ...more I understand, that more or less everyone are very much inspired by Ansel Adams. Every time I read about some artist I came across Adams name...N.Baroody is not exception. He several times attended legendary Ansel Adams workshops. So is really not surprising that he works are real piece of art.

Naseeb Beshara Baroody was born April 1924, in Florence, South Carolina to Lebanese parents. His life work in photography began early in his life - with a passion for black and white images. As a child, the technical and artistic aspects of photographic expression fascinated him, he began with the classic Baby Brownie and progressing into medium and large format cameras.
Although that his mine job was in medicine, he also was an author of an award winning books of fine art photography and many of many his prints is worth admiring ...specially seascapes, what became my mine subject of the landscape theme.

The sea is an endlessly inspiring environment....it can offer the potential for a huge range of pictures... N.Baroody was a genius for spotting that potential...he easy fined inspiration from lighting, subject matter and record shoots...

Hasn’t nothing to compare whit that I just want to say, - my opinion about black and white photography now is very high...and now I truly understand why is returning back into digital world....Black and white photography gives incredible lightness to the image, it's not overloaded with bold colors, but its simple , plain, calm....

Some photographers only work in black and white, others only with color, but digital photography allows the rest of us to have the best of both worlds and thats is amazing....

More from N.Baroody... just fallow those links...

Presenting Photo Images ( Assignment 211 part I)

As I am nearly adding finishing touches to my first theme Close ups in Nature dedicated to Spring. I thought its time to me move forward with Assignment 211 - Presenting Photo Images -what should include written account of three main points:

    1. The choice of presentation method;
    2. Description of methods used to present final images;
    3. Contrasts the presentation method with an alternative method of presentation using, different materials.

Today photos are mostly displayed on electronic devices from cell phones to digital picture frames, from USB memory sticks to CD or DVD discs which also lead to wall mounted HDTV's. But after spending time, money and effort on taking decant pictures, it seems to me a shame to leave them a drawer or on a hard disk, never to see the light of the day again. But thanks to technical progress of XX and XXI century now there are a lot of wonderful ways in which exhibit our work. So that leads us to beginning step…to display a work in a consistent way it needs to be printed out.

    Photo lab services.

The two most popular and traditional photo services are reprints and enlargements. Most photo kiosk labs has offered these service for decades. Many of them now offer a service that accepts damaged prints, and uses digital manipulation to correct colour casts, tears, scratches and stains.

Same prints fall into 2 broad categories by size - desktop prints and wall prints.
Desktop prints are generally considered to be 8" x 10" and smaller in size and obviously, anything larger than that falls into the wall print category.

    Personalized products
Most labs also offer us a various personalized products such as: having images placed on T-shirts, mouse mats, greeting cards, calendars, jigsaws etc...
(http://www.hhcolorlab.com/create/leather-fabric_accessories, website with a great choice of personalized accessories).
Canvas Blocks. Canvas art blocks been very popular in the last few years and now photo canvas blocks also are available. These are canvas prints stretched over a wooden frame, so they are ready to hang, wherever you desire. These comes a range of different sizes and shapes, to please any taste. http://www.canvas4life.co.uk/
Window blinds. Really personalized feel in home can add a photo roller blinds, which can be made to fit almost all windows. http://www.bagsoflove.co.uk/blinds/photo-blinds.aspx
Engraved glass. Having images etched on to glass is the latest innovation. The image is created by a laser, which makes tiny, but visible fracture points in the glass. That kind of products include plaques, key rings, tumblers and jewellery. http://www.skydesign.biz/default.asp
Photo Books. Digital technology has made it possible for photographers to produce 'coffee table' books containing their own photographs, with or without text and graphics. You can do it by yourself, with suitable software or get it done it for you on mostly Photo Kiosks or online. Photo books look great and are easy to handle and carry about for displaying to clients. This is one of most suitable presentation method apart from portfolio.

But let’s going back and remember that we are, I like to think that, professional photographers to be, so and that’s mean that most of mentioned above presentation methods, apart from photo books is not suitable. Sometimes it is best to just keep the format simple to focus on the composition within the frame.

    Framed Photographs.

Frames come all sorts and sizes, whatever you desire depends of your work and probably how much you are willing to spend. If pictures are part of a narrative or work well as a series, is good to consider mounting your photographs as a multiple composition. Some photographers are known for creating asymmetrical displays of their images that appear to have a random order.

The purpose of using a frame is to set the image off from the wall or desktop environment, and highlight it without detracting from the image.
For my two themes I already decided using Photo book for my Close ups in Nature and Paper mount frames for Landscape images. As it’s still in the process I`ll be updating this Assignment part with new information any time soon….
